How to upholster a Bergere chair

7.26.2012
We have a Bergere chair in our living room that we inherited from my grandfather last year. The chair is upholstered in a pale pink fabric which was a perfect fit in his apartment but looks not-so-hot in our living room. Also, either my grandmother or my grandfather got it in their heads that it would be a good idea to white-wash the wooden frame of the chair and then cover it in a wax, making it pretty much impossible to get rid of. The wood is too pale for our space, and I really want to darken it.

To make a long story short, I don't want to pay to have the chair recovered or fixed up. I've been determined to re-upholster it myself since we got it after seeing a few online tutorials. Based on the amount of 're-pins' I've had on Pinterest for an upholstery tutorial that I stumbled upon, I figured there were lots of other people out there also interested in learning how to do this. So, without further a do, here are a few images that have caught my eye and at the bottom you'll find a few links to upholstery tutorials that make the whole process look really easy.

The first link is to Jenny's take on the job at Little Green Notebook. She's got good step-by-step instructions that look really useful and the project is divided into 5 parts.

Here's another one from The Hunted Interior. I really love the contrasting fabric on the back of this one. I'm planning on doing that on mine for sure.

    1. Haha! I know what you mean! The idea of starting the chair totally freaks me out. That's likely why it's taking me so long to get going with it, though I tell myself it's because I haven't found the perfect fabric! My first upholstery job was a cushion on a metal chair too. I used safety pins to close up the hole because I didn't know the first thing about sewing by hand...ha! Then I did our dining chairs with a staple gun. It gets easier, I promise, though I'm no expert. Thanks for the comment and for reading!!!

  3. The bergere chair is beautiful. I spent many months researching different companies that sell a french style upholstered bed. I finally made the decision to go ahead and buy the Chelsea upholstered bed. Extremely pleased with my decision. Below is a link to the product page. Good-luck with your upholstered bed shopping.
