New antique french mirror for the living room

6.12.2014
Yesterday was one of those amazing Craigslist days where I found the exact thing I wanted at the exact moment I wanted it. Don't you love those days? I've been thinking that we needed a much larger mirror than the one we had over our fireplace. The one we had was a decent size - about 32" x 44" - but it had a thick black frame and I was ready for a change. I wanted a giant mirror that would go almost to the ceiling. Preferably gold. I have a master plan in the works for a complete living room change up and this was a first step.

My search led me to a seller who had an antique French mirror circa 1880 that they bought at the Paris Flea Market. They had it listed for a great price and the seller lived about 4 blocks from my house. All the stars had aligned.
I was a bit skeptical about the legitimacy of the antique claim until I saw it. This thing is built on old slats of wood and the frame is seriously crumbling in parts. The glass has a lovely antique patina on it. If it isn't a genuine antique, then somebody did a great job trying to make it look like one. I'm a believer! It also weighs about 1000 pounds so I know it isn't an Ikea hack.

We need to figure out a way to secure it to the wall but that will have to wait until I can get help - I can't even adjust the placement of it it's so heavy!

I can't wait to play around with a few other styling ideas I have for the mantle, and maybe some sconces?

Yay for change!
